If you send an email to martin dot willett at gmail do com and start to debate religion you may be intrigued at the reply. That Martin Willett, also a Martin J Willett, is a Christian, a man who writes the words and music for hymns. His most famous work being a hymn called Behold the Lamb. On his website, havestsongmedia.com he has a little disclaimer in the corner, which reads Note: I am NOT the Martin Willett from the UK who has the atheism website! I love that. There are several Martin Willett's out there. Maybe about a dozen or so in all. There is a Martin John Willett from Buffalo, New York, who I have conversed with by email, he is quite a bit younger than me. I think the hymn writer is Martin James Willett who is a few years older. There is at least one Martin Willett from Hampshire and one from Yorkshire. Googling oneself is an indulgence but it's addictive and I have been doing it for years, with the help of Google Alerts I now get to know within a few days at the most if somebody is saying anything about me online. Or if one of the other Martin Willett is bringing disrepute upon the name. There are a few Willett Drives and Willett Halls out there, the Willett family didn't amount to much in England, apart from William Willett, the man who invented summer time. By that I mean not the man who invented summer but the man who thought it would be a good idea to put the clocks forward in summer time to achieve - whatever that move is designed to achieve - get an hour's more work out of farm labourers I think. In America at least one of the lines of Willett's made good to the point of getting places named after them. These places are spread along the eastern seaboard, North and South. Also there must have been at least one branch of Willett's who owned, fucked and/or freed slaves. There are quite a few black Willett's in America. About 10% of the Willett's in America seem to be black. This month for the first time I find a mug shot in my email inbox. Martin Willett, aged 42, arrested in Seminole County, Florida. No charges specified. I will never forget the look on that face. If he was introduced to me as my cousin I would believe it. The man is clearly what the world knows as African American, but just as clearly he contains white genes, and if I'm not being a raving fantasist Willett white genes at that.
(I'm 47 now, but I was about 42 in that photo.)We are all one family Mr Willett. I have never been a racist, I have never seen the point of it. Now seeing that face has brought it into perspective. There is no way of knowing whether I am more closely related to that black man than I am to any of my neighbours. I may not be related to any of the other Mr Willett's I have just mentioned, the surname could have been independently coined more than once and given to unrelated men way back in the thirteenth century or whenever it was that surnames began to be fixed. That will certainly be the case with Smith (blacksmith), Jones and Johnson (son of John), and surnames named after places or personal characteristics such as Redhead. I remember clearly serving a customer who looked very pale, really notably pale of the sort that would get cast as a vampire. His name was Mr Albin, clearly a name given to a man who was very white if not actually albino. I could scarcely believe it. The Albin men had clearly not been cuckolded by their wives in nearly 30 generations. Quite remarkable and very much against the odds! How much against the odds? Just think about how different the Jews of Germany look from the Jews of the Middle East, and how different the Romanies are from North Indians who were their ancestors. All human groups leak genes in and out, no matter how much they apparently despise outsiders. That's just the nature of our species. There are rapes, there are clandestine affairs, sometimes there are secret adoptions, the raising of foundlings or even child abductions. Some people are attracted to those who look just like their mothers and sisters, others are fascinated by the exotic. The idea that races exist as pure breeding lines is nonsense. So is the idea that keeping the races separate is a good thing. Just leave people alone and let them get on with doing what, and who, they want to do. Over time racial lines will soften and blur. I don't think they will ever ever disappear, but they will cease to be matters to get worked up about. We are all one family. |
