One hundred years ago nobody would have turned a hair at the suggestion that the races are fundamentally different and indeed the opposite view, that the races were fundamentally equal, would have been regarded as absurd and a denial of science. Today to suggest that races even exist is considered to be a great heresy. Is this progress, a denial of the obvious or an evil form of censorship?

Anybody can state that the races don't exist and announce that all men are equal, nobody demands to see their doctorate. A brain-damaged ten year old child can announce that races are equal and will be given a standing ovation. A Nobel Prize winning biologist who says the opposite will be banned from campuses across the world.

My own view on the matter is that there is overwhelming evidence to support the concept that people should be treated as people and all people should be given the opportunity to make what they can of their life and not have their life mapped out for them on the basis of their perceived race, ethnicity or culture. Black people have become senators, fighter pilots, surgeons, professors, judges, rock guitarists and generals. There is no field in which black people cannot compete (competitive tanning is fictional). Similar things can be said for women, but here's the fundamental difference: nobody expects people to pretend that women and men will always do equally well in every field.

It is blindingly obvious that there would be hardly any famous women in sport if they had to compete against men. Nobody needs to lie and pretend that women and men are the same in order to argue for the right of women to take part. But in matters of race it seems it is necessary to lie and suppress evidence of difference and to lie about such suppression in order to maintain the fiction that human equality is based on science rather than ethics. The case for equality of access to education and opportunity is a moral one and it is cast iron, it will not be undermined by admitting that the aggregate IQ scores of different groups is not the same any more than the case for allowing women into universities is affected by the statistics that men outnumber women in the top (and bottom) 2% of achievements by two to one.

Human populations have been largely separate in breeding populations for tens of thousands of years. It takes an enormous effort of pig-headed faith to believe that it is impossible for there to be differences in aggregate intelligence between groups despite the existence of differences in skin colour, skull shape, facial features and stature. Maintaining that the average penis lengths of all races is also the same is as absurd as believing in transubstantiation or the Angel Moroni. Of course there are aggregate differences between populations and it is absurd to imagine that brain function and intelligence would be immune to variation, that the politically unacceptable would also conveniently be scientifically impossible is absurd. But the greatest absurdity is the way that the unthinkable is kept unthinkable, by closing down research and refusing to look in case evidence is found and declaring that anybody expressing an interest in the controversy must be an evil racist even to be interested. That line is as much bullshit as the “move along please there's nothing to see here” as police throw a cordon around the scene where three cheerleaders and a dwarf were decapitated with chainsaws.

The Edwardian concept that the white races had a duty to conquer the world based on their obvious superiority in intelligence does not stand up to scientific scrutiny. White men appeared smarter almost entirely because they valued their own culture and were educated in it. Eighteen centuries previously Romans despaired of the inferior stock that slaves from Britain and Germania represented, they were lazy and stupid savages. Today no doubt there are black GIs on the streets of Baghdad who think they are smarter than these ignorant illiterate towelheads, whose ancestors of course invented agriculture, writing and civilization when the ancestors of the Americans in their platoon were running around half naked with stone tools in the forests of Africa and Europe (and a few in America).

We are all shaped by our backgrounds and the extent to which we succeed in the modern world is determined far more by the culture we inherit than the genes our ancestors' tribes possessed. Whites are not superior to blacks in their genes, the advantage is cultural. African Americans outperform blacks, that is people who have come to America as immigrants from Africa have acted like immigrants rather than blacks, they have kept their heads down worked and saved and encouraged their children to excel in school. They have not assimilated into native black populations and they have not adopted the corrosive culture of low aspiration, single motherhood and welfare dependence. They didn't know they were destined to fail, so they didn't.
