I'm proud of that one, a really neat question that must have given those who solved the riddle quite a buzz, and gave many a headache for those that didn't. It seems 3iff was working late all week in his lab trying to come up with a chemical answer. Have you ever tried to buy californium in Birmingham?

A hunter shoots at me every October. The twins always send me a gift in December. When do I have to put up with the most bullshit?

Every year in October, Earth passes through a stream of dusty debris shed long ago by Halley's comet. When bits of comet dust -- most no larger than grains of sand -- strike Earth's atmosphere and disintegrate, they become "shooting stars." This is the annual Orionid meteor shower

[Orion = Hunter]

Most meteor showers happen when Earth passes through the debris trail of a comet. Every year in mid-December, there occurs a meteor shower from a curious near-Earth asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon. This is the annual Gemind meteor shower. Geminids look like most meteors -- they tend to be fast-moving and yellow in color. When the Geminid meteor shower is active, Earth is barely eight lunar distances (~0.021 AU) from Phaethon's orbit. That makes Phaethon a potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroid (NEA).

[Gemini = Twins]

[Taurus = Bull]

The Taurids have been identified as a very old meteor stream. There are two branches of the Taurids active during its long duration in the autumn months (or Spring months in the Southern Hemisphere). The Northern Taurids are active from October 12 to December 2. They reach maximum during November 4-7.

The Southern Taurids are active during September 17 to November 27. They reach maximum during October 30 to November 7.

Name the artist and title of this influential work.

Julian Lennon, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Peter's question went unanswered so he does not score a point, but I think he deserves a dozen smartarse bonuses for such an excellent question, and for sparing me the indignity of two players scoring 20 out of 20. (As if.)

If I recently heard the Chimes of Death, where is the middle of nowhere?

56°S 2°W The Chimes of Death are, theoretically, the worst thing you can have a Mac do (but I've heard them a total of three times on two different computers, both of which work). That doesn't tell you anything besides Mac. If you go to the Map control panel (I can't guarantee this for OS X, but up to there has it), type Middle of Nowhere into the location box, hit return that's the location that comes up. EasterEggs

Where does this gateway lead?

This is the Gateway of India leading to Mumbai (formerly Bombay).

The Gateway of India is meant to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay, prior to the Darbar in Delhi in December 1911. The foundation stone was laid on March 31, 1911 and George Wittet's final design sanctioned in August 1914. Between 1915 and 1919 work proceeded on reclamations at Apollo Pier for the land on which the gateway and the new sea wall would be built. The foundations were completed in 1920.

The Gateway is built from yellow Kharodi basalt and reinforced concrete. The central dome is 48 feet in diameter and 83 feet above ground at its highest point. The whole harbour front was realigned in order to come in line with a planned esplanade, which would sweep down to the centre of the town. The cost of the construction was Rs. 21 lakhs (10 lakh = 1 million.) For lack of funds, the approach road was never built, and the Gateway now stands at an angle to the road leading up to it. The construction was completed in 1924, and the Gateway opened on December 4, 1924 by the Viceroy, Earl of Reading.

The last British troops to leave India, the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry, passed through the gate in a ceremony on February 28, 1948.

On a world surrounded by panic and fear if you look into the sky (if is good) what colour is it?

Panic and fear are the two most common translations of Phobos and Deimos, Greek mythology dudes who gave their names to the satellites (moons seems a bit of a grand title for these runts) of Mars. Deimos is so small its escape velocity is ten metres per second, a fart could put you into space.

The atmosphere on Mars is thin, cold but dusty. The iron-rich dust lends the sky a reddish hue, sometimes described as the colour of butterscotch.

If is good? That was a reference to the Disney film (video, DVD, Happy Meal™ toy, quilt cover etc.) Hercules, in which two runtish minions of Hades (Pain and Panic) fret about what would happen if Hades discovered that they had failed to kill the infant Hercules (who should have been but hey, this is Disney after all, what do you expect, accuracy?) Leading to the excellent little line, if is good.

Pain and Panic are obviously derived from the companions of the God of war, Ares: Phobos and Deimos, which have also been translated as terror or rout as well as fear and panic. Ares became translated by memetic forces into the Roman god of war, Mars. Disney should have had the minion of Hades as Charon, but who would believe an Essex girl could be evil?

Five lads were placed in an order of merit (no ties). They remarked on the ranking thus:
Alf: Dave was third.
Bob: Ed wasn't first.
Carl: I wasn't last.
Dave: Carl was placed below Bob.
Ed: Bob was second.
The remarks of those who placed first and second were false, although the other three were true. What were their places?

Order is 1 A; 2 E; 3 B; 4 C; 5 D.

(i) If C spoke false he was last, but then he wouldn't speak false. Contradiction! So C spoke true, and must be 3rd or 4th.

(ii) If E spoke true then B was 2nd and would speak false, making E 1st, but then E wouldn't speak true. Contradiction! So E spoke false, and thus is 1st or 2nd, and B is not 2nd.

(iii) If B spoke false E is 1st and thus B would have to be 2nd, but we already know from (ii) that he isn't. So B spoke true (and so is 3rd or 4th or 5th), and E must be 2nd.

(iv) Either A or D is 1st (no-one else can be). If A spoke true then D is 3rd so A would be 1st, but then he wouldn't speak true. So A spoke false, and is 1st.

(v) We now have A=1st, E=2nd, so the others spoke true.

From (i) we know C is 3rd or 4th, D says C placed below B, so B is 3rd and C is 4th, so D is 5th.

I have up to 132 million legs and every living thing gets out of my way, or regrets it. What am I?

A colony of Dorylus wilverthi, the most prolific of several species of African Driver Ants. These act as a single organism, constantly moving, with up to 22 million closely related insects comprising their body, more than ten times the colony size of the South American Army Ants. While army ants will strip the jungle clear of every arthropod and worm driver ants eat any animal that cannot get away, and have been known to devour tethered goats and cows. Even elephants get out of the way, although a number of bird species prey on the stragglers. African people just stand clear, knowing that when they have passed by there will be no fleas, cockroaches or any other pests alive in the wake of the living river.

History's verdict might seem to be summarized in the name of the operation these men were engaged in. What was it?

The Doolittle raid. 18 April, 1942. The first major offensive by the USA against Japan. It was largely symbolic, little damage was done to the Japanese war fighting capability however the propaganda value was enormous, in both the USA and Japan.

Led by Lt Col James H Doolittle 16 B25B Army Airforce Mitchell medium bombers were launched from the USS Hornet to attack Tokyo and Nagoya. The plan was for them to continue on and land in China, no planes made it but most of the crew survived. Eight American airmen were captured, three were executed.

Watch out for the film 30 seconds over Tokyo.

Who explained one of his propositions by using an analogy that compared sitting with a good looking girl to sitting on a hot cooker?

Albert Einstein: “When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute and it's longer than any hour. That's relativity.”

Pink FLoyd sang about it once, Abba, three times, but who at some point sang about it ten times?

This one caused a bit of controversy. It seems Mony Python sang about money 9 times. Lisa Minelli sang about it up to 30 times, including one batch of 10. U2 sang 10, or was it 11? The Grateful Dead also sang about it 10 times. I couldn't be bothered, after all, everybody had at least one question wrong by then so it didn't bother me too much, if it had been different I might have been emailing the artists themselves. Nobody will ever get 20 unless the answers are perfect.
