I am not looking for answers I am looking for replies. As to where did I get the idea that God hates people, I'll give you one guess. Clue: it rhymes with solely libel.

God orders people be killed and he loves them? It really doesn't say that. It might not explicitly say that he hates people but it's not much of a stretch to get that impression. Deuteronomy 12:32 of course closes the door to any suggestion of changing the interpretation or getting rid of embarrassing bits. You're stuck with the stonings and abominations.

I'm not stuck with anything. Unless you are a hebrew living 2500-3000 years ago, that ritual laws of purification and cleansing won't apply to anyone living today. there are a number of verses which make it clear the God hates what people do, but you won't find a single one that says he hates any person. Not one.

And where is your chapter and verse for that? Deuteronomy 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. That seems rather clear to me. What's a few thousand years to a god?

You are obviously not a child, yet you argue like one. This proves you have no clue what you are talking about. In malachi Ch 1,the following verses are proeceeded with "...Yet ye say.." This is not God's words against Easau it is the people's word'sa against what they percieve what God says or thinks. Now, I'm still patiently waiting for you to come up with a verse that says God actually hates someone.

I have checked out several translations and none of them suggest anything other than God expressing his hatred of Esau. The Bible is full of God's hatred.

So you're saying that you believe in Jesus but not what he has been reported as teaching because those teachings don't feel right and so must be mistranslations or lies? If you are brain dead you are dead and you will not come back to life. Anybody recalling near death experiences cannot have been dead, by definition.

Clearly errors were made. When somebody who has been thought to be dead is moving around again the original diagnosis was wrong. That's the same today as it was two millennia ago.

If anybody comes back they haven't really ever gone away. Death is the irreversible ending of all life functions, not the stopping of the heart. As for descriptions of people coming back from the dead fifteen centuries before we knew what even the heart did we really should not be paying them so much credence.

"God did it" is not a theory in the scientific sense. Myth and superstition had a few thousand years head start on science, it is to be expected that peasant-silencing bullshit explanations would be in place before evidence arose to provide real answers.

Whether you are aware of it or not, judgements in Sharia Courts are now enforceable in the High Court. The Sharia (there are actually five schools of Islamic jurisprudence, by the way) is a complete system. It can be introduced piecemeal into the English Legal system until it has become full blown. We have not yet crossed the line, or perhaps it would be better to say the line has not been breached. I haven't read transcripts of bin Laden. I have found more than enough hateful language and damaging concepts in the Qur'an, "direct from God", apparently. I know that Muslims have a duty to spread Islam and to lie in order to do it. I do not regard Islam as benign because I have seen its effects. Where Sharia law is observed there is no freedom. Islam drives out tolerance. Bin Laden is not who I fear, it is the expansion of Islamic totalitarianism itself, which I will oppose at every step.

Christians began to get uneasy about enslaving fellow Christians around the time of the first millennium but there was no forbidding of enslaving infidels until the nineteenth century, moves which began in the previous century. Some Arab countries have forbidden slavery in the 21st century. Civilization is not a religious process.

Christians were morally radical, but that moral radicalism did not come from the teachings contained in the New Testament any more than did the notion of the trinity, limbo or transubstantiation. Christian teachings engender high-minded moral tones and enable Christians to go off on crusades against the Turks or prostitution or the demon drink, slavery, abortion, contraception, witches, communists, fags (and fag enablers), miscegenation, long hair, Byzantium, pot, science or liberals.

MartinJWillett - You're wrong completely. Authentic christian teachings, by definition, cannot orginate anywhere else other than in the sacred text of Christianity which is the entirety of the Bible. This is what Reformed Christian Chuch adheres to so I guess it would do little good to debate further as our positions appear firmly fixed !

I don't think Chistians 'hate' Hitchen. On the contrary, Christians LOVE everyone. That doesn't entail however, that there cannot be substantive, deep-seated, and vocal disagreement with someone's positions and arguments. Moreover, it is Hitchens who has stated w/o apology his complete and absolute right to HATE his enemies. He has argued that Jesus' ethic of love, mercy & forgiveness is immoral & repulsive.

The Bible is full of references to God hating and now suddenly it is ungodly on the say-so of a wandering preacher who is unable to provide a convincing or even coherent rational philosophical argument but instead relies on the effect of hearsay accounts of magic and calls for faith to paper over the doubts.

We have not become significantly smarter over the last tens of thousands of years, what has happened is our culture has become richer. This device shows that people over 2100 years ago were very smart but the culture wasn't as robust as it is today. If you ever go to school you will discover that the more education a person gets the less likely they are to have simple dogmatic beliefs of any kind and religion in particular. I've gone to Catholic school up until middle school. Almost everyone I went with is either atheiest, or a completely other religion. So, that wasn't a good point you just made. I am not stopping anybody from believing anything. All I am doing is attempting to ensure that as many people as possible know that belief in irrational pre-scientific Hebrew tribal myths is a choice not a requirement.

This video is a parable, every aspect of it is fictional, it has never happened in reality, every word, every pose, every "event" has been made up to "prove" the point of the person inventing the parable. Gods do what they're told to do by the priests who control them. They're not answerable to you. Many gods (especially the one-and-only gods) do punish people for all eternity for nothing more than not worshipping them. Your beliefs cannot change reality. If everything exists for a reason what is the purpose of God? How does God generate a purpose from ignorant wisdom? What impels God, what is the purpose of his eternal life and who will judge him a success or a failure?

Judgement is a human thing. People impose human ideas on God. The reality is that it is the only way they can understand God's laws of physics. "You reap what you sow", is the same as "for ever action there is an equal and opposite reaction". What you send you comes back to you and you harm yourself. That is the law of God. Words have meanings. Tools have purposes. People are not words or tools. We do not have meanings or purposes, we create our own because we are free agents. Having freedom is all about being able to define your own goals. If some other entity (state, party, church, god, parent, company, regiment.) has defined your purpose you are no more than a slave.

The Atheists world view has no explanation to offer for life's fundamental questions. The Atheists world view false to explain how the universe came into existence, they can not give any logical explanation.
Their world view also can not explain why we exist therefore devaluing all life and creation.
According to Atheists, there is no ultimate reason why anything exists, life is fundamentally meaningless.

The "explanations" offered by the religious are no better. We exist so God can test souls to find out which should be tortured for all eternity and which should become part of his eternal choir praising his name, telling him what he knew from before any of us existed. Personally I find the Dawkins answer to be far more satisfying.
