America's First 9-11

The only really good thing about America's availability of guns is it brings “suicide attempts” into their true perspective. When you have access to guns people can tell when a so-called suicide attempt is just a cry for help. At least they should be able to. Not that it isn't entirely obvious even without them.

Mandy leaves her office on the twelfth floor.

She drives home past three train tracks and four high level bridges.

She parks her car in her garage, and turns off the engine.

She goes inside. She puts down her clutch bag with the .25 automatic. She goes up to her bedroom. Sits on the bed. Goes to her bedside cabinet, leaves the 9mm automatic there and picks up a bottle with five sleeping tablets in it. She pours herself a small measure of vodka.

She puts the bottle back next to the bottle of gin and the bottle of bourbon. She goes into the kitchen, walking past the knife rack and the toaster, she glances across to the bathroom.

She goes into her medicine cabinet and selects eight headache tablets, four multivitamins and one of her cat's de-wormers. She then goes to her bed and lies across it, partially clothed, and makes a spectacular suicide attempt, allowing three of the tablets to spill across the bed to make the scene look just so.

When the friend she asked to come over comes round so does she.

Women seem almost incapable of efficiently killing themselves despite a much higher propensity to make it appear that they have been trying - until they pass the menopause. Suddenly with their capacity to bear children behind them they become as effective at succeeding in their attempts as men are. Have you ever wondered why that is?
